Educating children about Polio
Haenertsburg Rotary Club feels that there is a great deal of ignorance in the younger generations about Polio. Therefore, they tasked the Gr 9 pupils at Appel Combined School with researching Polio for a presentation to the school on World Polio Day. The learners were given guidelines for their research and pointers for suitable sites to examine. Half way through the allocated 6 week period, we checked on their progress which was good.
On World Polio Day, the 4 teams (the class decision) presented aspects of their research to the assembled school in the school hall. Given the limited access the learners had to internet searches, the Rotarians who attended this presentation were impressed with the considerable effort which had been made.
At the end of the presentation, every pupil was given an End Polio Now ribbon and then given a party pack with goodies, a juice box and a packet of popcorn.
A Friend of Rotary, a retired nursing sister, then spoke to the Gr 9 pupils, encouraging them to remember what they had learned and entrenching the need for vaccinations.
Funds raised for Polio
In June 2016, the Haenertsburg Club raised over R7000 for the Polio Plus Fund through various initiatives. This effort was led by PP Maria da Silva as a personal goal of her year as President.
